August 22, 2018 / 5:14 AM / Updated 2 hours ago Typhoon forces Britain and Japan to cancel historic beach landing drill TOKYO (Reuters) – Britain and Japan canceled a plan for a simulated amphibious beach assault near Mount Fuji this week that would have been the first joint drill between their troops in Japan, officials said on Wednesday, as a typhoon approached the Japanese mainland. Typhoon Cimaron, which is heading north from the western Pacific, is expected to bring strong winds and rain to Japan over the next few days. Britain and Japan had planned for a Royal Marine detachment and Japanese amphibious troops to storm the beach from boats launched from the British Navy’s flagship amphibious assault carrier HMS Albion on Friday. The cancellation was announced by Britain’s embassy in Japan and the Ministry of Defence in Tokyo. The Albion has operated in and around Japanese waters for several weeks, including patrols to help enforce United Nations sanctions on North Korea, as Britain seeks to bolster defense ties with Japan as it prepares to exit the European Union. London is eager for a presence in a region that is driving global economic growth, while Tokyo wants to nurture defense ties beyond its traditional ally, the United States, as it contends with China’s growing military. A Japanese destroyer and helicopters had also been assigned to the exercise in addition to the participation of Japan’s first marine unit since World War Two, the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade. Activated in April, the 1,500-strong force backed up by helicopter carriers, amphibious ships, Osprey tilt-rotor troop carriers and amphibious assault vehicles was formed to counter any threats against islands along the edge of the East China Sea that Tokyo worries could be vulnerable to attack by China. However, its existence is controversial because critics warn amphibious units could theoretically be used against Japan’s neighbors in breach of a post-World War Two constitution that renounces the right to wage war. Useful Guidelines For Elementary Methods

California's largest fire ever keeps growing as winds fan flames

“You have to have plan A, B, C, D — and sometimes E, F, G.” Every five or 10 minutes, firefighters on the line are encouraged to “look up, look around and make a sound,” Pappas said. Conditions have been ripe for the erratic fire behavior that has led to the explosive growth of the Ranch fire, which along with the River fire makes up the 364,145-acre Mendocino Complex fire. The days are so hot and dry that whatever gains firefighters see overnight when the humidity goes up quickly fade when the sun hits the fuels and sucks the moisture out. Lately, winds have started to pick up about 5 p.m., gusting to between 15 and 25 mph. “That will really push a fire — no person on Earth runs 25 mph,” Pappas said. “We all want to go home at the end of the day, or the end of the shift, and make it back to our families.” Residents around Clear Lake have been allowed to return home, but new evacuation orders were announced in the last few days for communities to the east and west of Mendocino National Forest, including Stonyford, Lodoga and Potter Valley. That presents another challenge for firefighters. Unlike the Clear Lake area, which is fairly accessible by road, these communities are farther into the forest and surrounded by more rugged terrain, said Cary Wright, a Cal Fire spokesman. Wright said the persistent low humidity has allowed the fires to continue growing — by 9,400 acres on Tuesday and 1,300 acres Monday.

Penn & Teller return to their namesake Las Vegas theater at the Rio Playing on their difference in height, comedic magicians Penn & Teller returned to their Las Vegas show on Saturday night. (Caesars Entertainment) Penn & Teller returned to the Las Vegas stage, nearly two months after back surgery forced Teller to take a break. The iconic magicians returned to the stage Saturday night in the theater named for them at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino . “I thought there was an especially long welcoming applause at the beginning of the show,” Teller said. “The energy that the love of the audience provides you with is quite overwhelming.” For a 70-year-old magician, back surgery could be a good excuse to retire. But partner Penn Jillette, 63, and Teller have no such intentions. They used their comeback from a 50-day hiatus to announce a three-year extension to their contract. Penn & Teller have been performing their comedic magic show at the off-Strip resort since 2001. They first began working together 43 years ago. Penn & Teller soon will be introducing new content to keep the show fresh. “I suspect within two or three weeks, there will be three new pieces in the show,” Teller said.
